Midway From Space |
|
The extent of interest in Midway literally is out of this world. The result of one of many promotional/marketing relationships we are establishing, attached is a satellite image of Midway as the tugs nudged her alongside Navy Pier at 11:38 a.m. on January 10, 2004. Incredibly it was taken by a satellite 400 miles over San Diego,
traveling at four-and-a-half miles per second and able to take photos
to a resolution of one square meter.
"Navy Pier," near the foot of Broadway in San Diego, is the large rectangular protrusion in the center of the photo. If you look closely at the pier, you'll see the shadow of the Midway superstructure on the pier. The angled flight deck is easily identified in the photo. The ship is being pushed into position by three tugs, partially obscured by the overhang of the ship. Ship facts for those who are interested: Commissioned in 1947; 64,000 tons full load displacement; 979 feet long; 212,000 shaft horsepower, a ship's crew plus air crew of 4,450, and capable of 33 knots (37.5 mph). A VERY nice addition to the San Diego waterfront. Got a Minute? Click here for a larger view Submitted by John Keith |
