From the PresidentAfter listening to the President speak recently it becomes apparent how important real leadership is to the accomplishment of the mission. Having spent years in the military we can all look back on the many times we have seen leaders rise to the top and bring the mission to a successful conclusion. Through my years in the Navy I have seen many good leaders, but one that stands out in my mind more than the others I have served under was Captain Jack Mansfield. I think we all learned to have great respect and admiration for him as skipper of the Topeka. I believe it is because he always genuinely respected everyone in his command and made us all feel an important part of the task at hand. Yes, he was a great skipper and he will be greatly missed by all hands. John Reynolds
As Katharine Lee Bates viewed the summit of Pike's Peak, she was inspired to pen the lines to her famous poem, "America the Beautiful." Join us in Denver August 21-24 and we'll see what she saw. Go West Young Man!Well, some of us will be going west. Others will be going north, south and east. It's time to start thinking about deployment again, and this year's cruise to Denver for the August 21-24 annual get-together of Topeka sailors, wives, girlfriends and friends. The registration form and reunion highlights information are contained in this newsletter. Complete the registration and return it to Jack Timmons, and put the date on your calendar (in ink). This will be the 13th time we have met, and Chairman Ken Noble promises that this one, like all the others before it, will be the best one yet. Come join with us and share your favorite sea stories. |
