January 17 1832 - The frigate USS Peacock makes contact with Vietnamese
court officials. 1900 - Cmdr. Edward D. Taussig, commanding officer of the
gunboat USS Bennington (PG 4), takes formal possession of Wake
Island. 1954 - USS Nautilus (SSN 571), the first nuclear-powered
submarine, is commissioned at Groton, Conn. After setting sail,
